Ongoing leak

If you have noticed a persistent leak in your home, try to prevent damage by
collecting the leaking water, for example in a bucket or by wrapping a towel
around a leaking pipe immediately.

Try to further prevent damage by turning off the water supply. Locate the
stopcock, this is usually under the kitchen or bathroom sink, but it may be
under the stairs, or nearby cupboard. Turn the tap clockwise to turn off the water
supply.

If the leak could cause any damage to your home’s wiring or electricals, turn off
the electricity at the fuse box, as well as the water supply until the appliance or
the cause of the leak is fixed.

If it is a major leak, make sure everybody at home is safe including pets and
secure your personal possessions.

Once everything is safe, be sure to gather any evidence of damage to your
property. Take lots of photos and videos of where the leak is emerging, and the
damage caused for the home insurance claims team.
