What an open shift is
How to apply for an open shift using the Check-In app
An open shift is a shift that hasn't been assigned to anyone yet. It is up to the employees to request taking the open shift, and whoever gets the shift depends on which of the two following settings the manager applied when creating it:
The first person to apply for the shift gets it automatically. A notification is sent to the employee who got the shift and to those that did not.
Multiple people can apply for the shift, but it is up to the manager to decide who gets it in the end. When the decision has been made, the employees are notified that they either got the shift or did not.
Just because there are two different ways of creating an open shift doesn't mean there are two different ways of requesting them - the only difference is that you either get notified straight away that you got it, or that your request is pending approval.
Now that you're more familiar with what an open shift is and how they work, let's learn how to apply for them:
How to apply for an open shift
1. Make sure you're logged into your own SameSystem account in the Check-In app.
Any open shifts that are available are located on the Home screen, just above the bottom main menu. See the below image for reference:
2. Click on the open shift to see more details. You should see start- and end time, breaks (if any), and which department it belongs to. You can tap the Decline button if you can't make the shift. However, for the purpose of this article, we'll tap Accept to apply for it.
3. As mentioned previously, you'll either get notified straight away that you got the shift, or that your request is pending approval. In our example below, we see that we have to wait for the manager's approval.
That's it! 🎉 Let's have a look at how we know if we got the shift or not:
What happens next?
You will receive a notification on your mobile device in both scenarios to avoid any confusion; a notification if you got the shift, and a notification if you did not.
Note: For us to be able to notify you, you'll have to allow the Check-In app to send notifications to your mobile device. Tap More > Settings in the app, and from here, activate notifications.
Tip: You can always tap the Notifications icon in the bottom menu to see any recent changes to your calendar, including updates to any open shifts:
If you got the shift, simply head into your Calendar to see it amongst your other planned shifts:
