How to: Block Pasting in Task Responses

Use this article to block participants from pasting copied external content into task responses.

Enabling this setting encourages participants to type out authentic responses manually instead of pasting text from external tools or resources (such as generative AI).

Prerequisites & Permissions

  • Required Role: Administrator

  • Scope: Can be configured study-wide or on an individual task level.

Block Pasting for All Tasks in a Study

Enabling study-level block pasting prevents participants from pasting external text into text fields across all tasks in the study by default.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Study Admin > Study Settings > Data Integrity.

  2. Locate the Block Pasting header.

  3. Toggle on Task responses.

  4. Click Save.

Expected Outcome: Pasting copied external content is blocked for participants in all tasks within the study by default.

Block Pasting for a Specific Task

You can block pasting for a single task, or override the study-level default for an individual task.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the Activity that contains the relevant Task.

  2. Hover over the Task card.

  3. Click the dropdown arrow on the card and select Edit.

  4. Scroll to the Advanced header.

  5. Select the Block pasting of external content checkbox.

  6. Click Save.

Expected Outcome: The selected task applies the block pasting setting, regardless of whether block pasting is enabled or disabled at the study level.

Participant Restrictions and Administrator Exceptions

Task-Level Overrides

  • Study-wide block pasting settings apply to all tasks by default, but can be overridden within the setup of any individual task.

  • Deselecting Block pasting of external content in a specific task allows participants to paste content in that task even if block pasting is turned on for the study.

Participant Experience

  • When block pasting is enabled for a task, participants cannot paste copied external text into any response text field within that task.

Administrator Exceptions

  • Block pasting settings apply only to participants.

  • Enabling block pasting does not restrict administrators from pasting external content into the study space, unless an administrator is actively using Preview mode for an Activity or Task.
