The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is EU legislation

requiring all large companies and listed SMEs to publish regular reports on their

environmental and social impact.

Objectives of CSRD

  • Strengthen the quality and quantity of sustainability reporting in the EU

  • Provide investors and stakeholders with investor-grade data about a firm’s ESG impacts

  • Increase interoperability and access to and comparability of sustainable information

  • Encourages investment in more sustainable activities in the EU

Alongside guidelines for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, the CSRD introduces a reporting framework known as the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Where CSRD is the directive requiring companies to report, ESRS is the framework according to which companies will have to report.

The CSRD expands the scope of sustainability reporting, affecting approximately 50,000 companies across Europe, with the aim of standardising non-financial data reporting.
