The Use of Sold Products emissions category refers to the emissions associated with the usage and consumption of your products after they have been sold to consumers or business customers. A variety of calculation methods are available for different types of products sold.

Cloud usage data in S3C1 vs. S3C11

When reporting cloud emissions, usage data needs to be split between two Scope 3 categories:

Scope 3, Category 11 – Use of sold products

This includes production software usage. In other words, if cloud services are directly powering your live, customer-facing applications, they belong in Category 11.

Scope 3, Category 1 – Purchased goods and services

This includes all other cloud infrastructure services you purchase that are not use in customer-facing applications. Two key differences:

  • It covers non-production environments (development, testing, staging).

  • It includes all usage types from your cloud provider – not just storage or data transfer, but also compute, networking, and databases.
