Picking the Right Job

  • Choose a job you are passionate about and that meets your financial needs.

  • Think about how MG affects you.

    • Ask if the job needs lots of talking or heavy lifting.

    • Ask about job shadowing before saying yes.

    • Think about your work schedule and flexibility:

      • When are you strongest and weakest?

      • Will your job accommodate this?

      • Would your job allow you to take frequent breaks?

Talking to Your Boss

  • Consider telling your employer about your MG if you think you might need some help

    • They might make adjustments to your work environment

    • If your job involves driving to must notify the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) of your MG.

    • Under the Road Traffic Act of 1988, it is an offence if you fail to notify the DVLA about a disability.

Your Rights at Work

  • A law called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects your rights including:

    • Protecting qualified individuals from discrimination in employment, public services, transportation, public accommodation and telecommunication.

    • Employers have to accommodate your disabilities if you qualify.

Tips for Working with MG

  • If you get tired:

    • Take breaks.

    • Change your work hours.

    • Maybe work from home.

    • Use tools like scooters.

  • If it's hard to see:

    • Use large print material or screen reading software.

    • Control glare by adding a glare screen to the computer.

    • Take frequent breaks.

    • Alternate covering one eye.

  • If talking is tough:

    • Use tools to help talk (e.g., speech enhancement tools).

    • Use written communication more (e.g., email)

    • Take frequent breaks.

  • If hands are weak:

    • Get an ergonomic workstation.

    • Use special tools (e.g., arm supports, writing and grip aids)

    • Ask for a note taker.

  • If moving is hard:

    • Ask for parking close to the worksite.

    • Make sure equipment at the workstation is within reach.

    • Move the workstation close to break rooms.
