How does MG progress?

The progression of the disease varies from person to person but tends to get worse over time.

How MG Progresses

  • The disease can change over time, but usually gets worse.

  • Some people (10% - 40%), only have weak eye muscles.

  • The rest have increasing weakness in throat and limb muscles.

  • In two thirds of people, maximum weakness occurs in the first year.

Different stages of MG

  • Active Stage

    • Symptoms change quickly at first.

    • They then tend to get worse for several years.

  • Inactive State

    • After the active stage, symptoms improve and tend to fluctuate.

    • Here, any changes in strength are often because of:

      • Tiredness

      • Getting sick

      • Other clear reasons

  • Burnt-Out Stage

    • 15-20 years later, the weakness can become permanent.

    • Some muscles might stop working altogether.

Things that make symptoms worse

  • Feeling very emotional.

  • Getting sick, especially with colds.

  • Problems with the thyroid gland.

  • Being pregnant.

  • Menstruation.

  • Certain medicines.

  • Getting too hot.
