What is sustainable nutrition?

Explains what sustainable nutrition means and how Huel defines it — nutritionally complete food that's affordable, accessible, and low-impact on the planet.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Sustainable nutrition means providing food that supports good health while protecting the planet's resources for future generations.

Huel's definition of sustainable nutrition

Huel defines sustainable nutrition as food that satisfies all three of the following criteria:

  1. Nutritionally complete — delivers all the essential nutrients the human body needs in the right amounts

  2. Accessible and affordable — available to as many people as possible, regardless of income or lifestyle

  3. Low environmental impact — produced with minimal impact on greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land use, and biodiversity

Why all three matter

Nutrition that's healthy but unaffordable fails most of the world. Food that's affordable but environmentally destructive is not truly sustainable. Huel's goal is to excel on all three dimensions simultaneously — which is why Huel products are plant-based, nutritionally complete, and designed to be cost-effective at scale.

Huel's approach in practice

Huel measures the carbon footprint of every product, uses plant-based ingredients chosen for lower environmental impact, and prices products to be competitive with conventional meal options. Sustainable nutrition is not a premium — it's Huel's baseline.
