Allergen & phytic-acid notes in Huel Essential

Huel Essential: free from 9 major US allergens but NOT certified gluten-free, NOT suitable for celiac disease or PKU. Facility handles other ingredients.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Huel Essential is free from all 9 major US allergens. It is produced in a facility that handles other ingredients, so trace cross-contamination cannot be fully excluded — always check the packaging for the most current allergen information.

Gluten and celiac disease

Huel Essential is not certified gluten-free and is not suitable for people with celiac disease. The formula contains oat flour, which can trigger reactions in people with celiac or severe gluten sensitivity. If you have celiac disease, Huel Essential is not recommended — consider Huel Black Edition or Huel RTD instead.

PKU (Phenylketonuria)

Huel Essential is not suitable for people with PKU (Phenylketonuria) due to its protein content. If you have PKU, please consult your healthcare provider before using any Huel product.

What about phytic acid?

Huel Essential contains phytic acid — a naturally occurring compound found in plant foods like oats and flaxseed. Phytic acid can bind to certain minerals (particularly iron and zinc), potentially reducing how much your body absorbs.

Huel addresses this in two ways:

  • The formula includes higher levels of iron and zinc to compensate for any reduction in absorption

  • Vitamin C is included to actively support iron absorption

If you have specific concerns about mineral deficiencies, we recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before making changes to your diet.
