Want to create an online exam? You've come to the right place! Just follow the steps below, and you'll have a new exam in no time!

Creating an exam

The first step is creating an account. Don't have one yet? Read more on how to create an account.

Once you've done that, you'll see some options on your dashboard. For all accounts, you can create courses and exams. If you're unsure which format to choose, please look at the available options for creating learning content.

Okay! Now you're sure that creating an exam is the best option for you. So here's how you can do it!

1. Create

Go to the Exams > Create new exam.

A pop-up window will open for you to enter the title of your new exam. Enter a name (you can change the title later) and click Get started.

Questions

Now you can start adding questions to your exam. Just click Create new question and choose a question type. We have the following types available:

  • Multiple choice (also true/false questions)

  • Fill in the blanks

  • Free text

  • Image answers

  • Audio questions

  • Video questions

Can't decide? Let's start with Multiple choice. Don't worry! You can change the question type afterward. You can have more than one type of question in an exam, too😃!

For Multiple choice questions, you can:

  • Add an image to accompany your question.

  • Add up to 10 possible answers.

  • Mark more than one answer as correct.

  • Add Question feedback to explain answers.

  • Choose whether to Shuffle answers or not.

When you're done, click Save & add new question.

Do you have a long list of questions and don't want to enter them one by one? No problem. You can import your questions in bulk with an Excel file from Questions > Import.

You can also watch our tutorial video on how to create questions:

Start page

On the Start page, you can:

  • Change the Exam title.

  • Add an Introduction text.

  • Assign your exam to an exam category.

  • Select the Language for the exam's participant interface.

  • Customize the Start button text that appears on the start button.

  • Add an image for the Introduction text.

Click Save when you're done!

Behavior

Now, let's go to the Behavior section. Here, you can ensure your exam behaves as you want it to.

From Exam Type, you can choose one option from the drop-down list:

  • Participant can change answers allows your participants to change their minds.

  • Participants can skip answers allows them to return to unanswered questions at a later time.

  • Participant cannot change answer is quite strict. Participants only get one chance to answer each question.

  • Participant can see the correct answer after answering each question gives participants feedback by flashing green or red.

  • Participant has multiple attempts per question allows them to answer questions multiple times.

You can also set a time limit for the whole exam or per question. If you wrote Question feedback, you can select when to show it. Lastly, this is where you choose how many questions you want chosen for the exam and randomize them.

Grading

Here we'll create pass/fail categories for your exam. You can create as many categories as you wish, but a simple solution is to keep two categories there, one for Pass and one for Fail. You can adjust the settings for your Pass category by selecting the Edit icon:

Certification

You can choose from one of our available templates to automatically generate a certificate for participants who pass your exam. Read how to set up a certificate for exams.

Our certificate editor also allows you to create a custom design certificate. You must be on an Advanced plan to access this cool feature.

Styling

The next step is the Styling. You can make changes to your exam to make it match your brand or personal style, such as adding a logo:

Suppose you're not happy with the standard layout and styling options. In that case, it's possible to edit the CSS and make some custom changes to make your exam look even more impressive (this feature is available in the Advanced plan 😉).

To give you an example, this is the link to an exam that was just styled with the available settings on the dashboard:

And this is the same exam, but now with custom CSS styling:

Result page

The next step is to customize your Result page.

If you click Select a layout, there are two options to choose from:

  • Feedback: By choosing this option, you can show questions, answers, explanations for each, and scores. You can also use this layout to hide their score and answers.

  • Leaderboard: This option allows your participants to see how they measure up to their colleagues. They can have higher or lower positions depending on their score and how long it took them to complete the exam.

2. Share

Access

Go to Access to edit the settings and determine who can access your exam. Read more on inviting participants to take an exam.

You can also add a start and end date and time to restrict the availability of the exam.

Participant data

In the Participant data section, you can edit the settings for your login page. You can make it mandatory or optional for participants to log in, ask them extra questions, and create custom questions.

Scroll down to see the option to create your own questions:

Don't forget to hit Save😃.

Terms & conditions

Specify the Terms & conditions that participants must accept before taking your exam. This can include Terms & conditions or checkboxes like "I agree to receive emails from this company," for example.

Publish

Go to Publish > Share to find the exam URL. You can send it when you have the setting Anyone with the link selected in the Access section. You can copy and paste this URL into an email, social media post, WhatsApp message, etc.

The checkbox to allow your exam to be found by Google is selected by default. You can deselect it if you wish.

Send email

Finally, the last step in the sharing process is to Send email.

You'll only edit this section if you choose to share your exam with A predefined group of participants in the Access section. Read more about how to invite participants to take your exam.

Note that you can only send a certain number of invitations daily, and your rate limit depends on your subscription type.

3. Analyze

Results

After you've finished creating and sharing your exam with your audience, it's time to look at the results and statistics. Your exam results will be associated with any participant data you asked for on the login page.

You can even export the results into an Excel file, and if you click on the three gray dots, you can view the results per person with a list of all their answers, participant details, and results per category.

Settings

There are some extra options you may wish to explore.

Integrations

Go to Integrations to see two possibilities:

  • API integration: With this integration, Easy LMS can receive participant data (name, email address) from a third-party tool and add it to the Access section of the exam. The participant can receive an invitation email to take the exam immediately, or you can add them to the exam and send the invitation at your convenience.

  • Webhook integration: You can send session data and participant data from Easy LMS to another tool of your choice, using Zapier as a middleman.

To set up integrations from your exam, you need to be on an Advanced plan.

Notifications

Here you can decide if you want to:

  • Receive a notification email every time someone completes the exam (it can be sent to your account email address or another email address of your choice).

  • Send a notification email with the results to the participant (this includes what appears on the exam’s Result page).
