Step 7 of 7: Additional topic: Cutouts for Profiles

PL2.7: Create Geometry for Cutout Purposes.

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Final part of the sequential Car Frame tutorial. Complete the previous steps first — this step cuts an opening for the pulley beam into the car frame assembly you built.

Prerequisites

  • The car frame and pulley beam are finished and saved.

Steps

1.) Add a new Profile Volume Description record. In DigiPara Liftdesigner Datamanager, open the Profile Volume Descriptions table (under Geometry Groups) and add a new record describing the cutout — e.g. "Pulley beam cutout."

2.) Define the new cutout profile. In the Developer Work Area, add a new profile shaped and positioned to match the opening (e.g. Flat steel, sized and positioned with equations referencing the surrounding profile's parameters, such as -PUT_D - 250 + DBG and 60 + PUD_B). Name it "Cutout." Open its Profile Modes dialog and check Subtract under Shaft. In its Properties window under [0519] Options, set Volume index to "Pulley beam cutout."

3.) Link all necessary profiles to the given volume index. Select the profile(s) representing the solid material the opening should be cut from. Open each one's Profile Modes dialog and check Add under Shaft (the default for ordinary profiles), and set the same Volume index value, "Pulley beam cutout," in its Properties window.

Result

The slot for the pulley beam is now cut out of the surrounding profile wherever the "Add" and "Subtract" profiles sharing the "Pulley beam cutout" volume index overlap.

Tutorial complete

This was the final optional step of the Car Frame tutorial. The finished car frame now has its geometry, positioning points, an adjustable and rule-constrained dynamic property, a custom dimension point, a related pulley beam with its pulleys, and a cutout for the pulley beam slot — all saved into the DigiPara BIM Library.
