Impact startups: Impact startups are companies that address one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the core of their business. Tech for good and purpose-driven startups are also terms that are used to identify these companies.

Impact companies are labelled with the sustainable development goals tag. Additionally, we also differentiate if companies based on whether the purpose-driven impact of the company is ‘core’ to the business model or a ‘peripheral’ or indirect component of the business model. If core then the core sustainable impact tag is applied on top of ‘sustainable development goals’.

Outside tech: a tag used to qualify companies which fall outside the Dealroom startup definition, owing to the characteristics of their business model and given the context of industries in which they evolve.

Outside tech companies may share some characteristics with startups, for instance being founded after 1990, competing with startups, or they may have raised capital (albeit non-venture capital). But they may still not align to the definition of startup as a company that is built to grow fast, and unlikely to follow a startup-like growth trajectory. The outside tech tag does not qualify the level of innovation, or relevance of a company for the wider innovation ecosystem. In fact, many outside tech companies are important players in their respective segments and ecosystems.

Examples include:

  • FMCG brands and concepts:

    • Beverages brands and producers all the way from local craft beer brands Alegria to alcoholic beverages behemoth Diageo, although notable exceptions of VC-backed beverages startups include Bira91 and BrewDog.

    • Food and dairy brands like China's Mengniu conglomerate are outside tech, whilst VC-backed disruptive competitor Oatly will be included.

    • Fashion brands and (e-)commerce outlets, e.g. Authentic Brands Group are outside tech, but Poland's CCC or Swiss On Running, backed by Roger Federer, are considered unicorns owing to their unique specificities, such as direct-to-consumer approach and R&D intensive products, respectively.

  • Platform economy companies in education, jobs recruitment or real estate:

  • Fleet and other asset operators and solutions

    • Toll road management leader Abertis is outside tech but smart toll-road solutions like Unytag are considered startups.

The outside tech tag is manually curated by Dealroom's Data Quality team and/or our network of ecosystem moderators. A company with the "outside tech" tag will not count towards combined enterprise value, funding, and other aggregated metrics on the Dealroom app.
