Using advanced dashboard charts

Learn how to build advanced Analytics+ widgets including Drill-down, Dual Axes, and Comparison charts for deeper business insights.

Add on required: Analytics+

While standard custom widgets provide a great high-level overview of your data, the Analytics+ add on unlocks advanced chart types that allow you to layer multiple data points into a single visualization. This reduces dashboard clutter and allows you to analyze complex relationships between different metrics.

➡️ Click Analytics in the nav bar → Click the Menu icon → Select a dashboard

Getting started

Because advanced charts use the exact same 5-step builder as standard widgets, you must start the standard creation process before applying any advanced features:

  1. Click Add custom widget.

  2. Complete Step 1: Data source by naming your widget and selecting your data object.

Once your data source is selected, you can apply any of the advanced configurations below as you continue through the wizard.

For more information on the basic widget setup, read Building custom widgets.

Compare two metrics (Dual-axis charts)

Comparison charts allow you to display two different metrics side-by-side, making it easy to spot correlations (e.g., comparing Invoice Total against Cost Total to track profit margins).

  1. In Step 2: Chart type, scroll down to the Dual axes charts or Comparison charts category and select a compatible chart (e.g., Column & Line).

  2. In Step 3: Metric, select your primary metric (e.g., Invoice Total).

  3. Click Add metric to add a secondary calculation, and select your second metric (e.g., Cost Total).

  4. Finish grouping and filtering your data, then click Save.

Create a drill-down (Secondary grouping)

A drill-down allows you to click on a specific segment of a chart (like a slice of a pie chart) to reveal a deeper layer of data beneath it (e.g., viewing jobs by Category, and then drilling down to see them by Status).

  1. In Step 2: Chart type, scroll down to the Charts with secondary grouping category and select a compatible chart (e.g., Drill-down pie).

  2. Proceed to Step 4: Group by and select your first, high-level grouping field.

  3. Click Add drill down.

  4. Select your secondary grouping field.

  5. Finish filtering your data, then click Save.

How to use it: On your dashboard, click any segment of your newly created chart. The chart will update to show the secondary grouping for that specific segment. A "Back" button will appear in the top left corner of the widget to return to the top level.

Analyze trends over time (Advanced date grouping)

Standard grouping allows you to divide data by categories like status or technician. Advanced date grouping allows you to divide data chronologically, which is essential for spotting trends over time.

  1. In Step 4: Group by, select a date-based field from your data source (e.g., Created Date or Completed Date).

  2. A new Grouping Interval dropdown will appear.

  3. Select how you want the time period divided (e.g., by Day, Week, Month, Quarter, or Year).

  4. Finish filtering your data, then click Save.

What happens next?

Common questions

Why can't I see the advanced chart options?

Advanced chart types and grouping options are exclusively available with the Analytics+ add-on. If your account plan does not include this add-on, these options will be hidden from the widget builder.
