Before you can place your first margin trade on Coinmetro, you’ll need to allocate funds as collateral. Collateral acts as security for the borrowed funds used when trading on margin — and it’s an essential part of risk management.
The maximum collateral limit on Coinmetro’s Margin Platform is currently €50,000.
⚠️ Once funds are allocated as collateral, they’re locked and cannot be withdrawn or used elsewhere until your margin positions are closed. You can release funds from collateral immediately if you have enough free margin available.
💰 Which Assets Can Be Used as Collateral?
At the moment, only major fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies can be allocated as collateral. More assets will be added in the future.

🪙 Using XCM as Collateral
Yes — you can now use XCM as part of your margin collateral! Here are a few important things to know:
✅ XCM can be added as collateral like any other supported asset.
📊 Up to 30% of your total collateral can be in XCM.
Example: If you allocate €1,000 as collateral, up to €300 can be XCM, and at least €700 must be in other assets.
💸 The applied value of XCM is only 30% of its market value.
Example: If XCM is priced at €0.60, only €0.20 per XCM will count toward collateral.
🚫 You can allocate a maximum of €10,000 worth of XCM as collateral.
🏦 Primary Collateral Explained
When allocating multiple assets as collateral, one must be set as your Primary Collateral.
If you’ve only added one asset as collateral, it’s automatically set as the primary.
If you’ve added more than one, you can manually select your primary asset in the collateral panel.
Your primary collateral determines how profits and losses (P&L) from margin trading are settled.
Example: If your primary collateral is EUR, all profits and losses will be settled in EUR — even if your trade involved BTC or another crypto. If your primary collateral is BTC, then all P&L will be settled in BTC.
➕➖ Adding and Removing Collateral
Adding or removing collateral on Coinmetro’s Margin Platform is simple and flexible. To add collateral, go to your Margin Dashboard, select the asset you want to allocate, enter the amount, and confirm — the funds will then be locked as collateral. To remove collateral, make sure you have enough free margin to cover your open positions, then select the collateral allocation you wish to release and confirm the withdrawal. Any released funds become immediately available in your wallet for other trades or withdrawals.

⚖️ What Happens if You Take a Large Loss?
If your trading loss exceeds the value of your primary collateral:
The loss is first covered by your primary allocation.
The next largest collateral allocation automatically becomes the new primary.
Any remaining loss is deducted from that allocation.
This process continues until the entire loss is covered.
This system ensures that losses are distributed fairly across your collateral allocations.
