The ability to add Widgets to a dashboard helps users build powerful dashboards using Charts driven by Explore. This capability is further enhanced by the fact that Widgets on a Dashboard can be replaced with other Widgets to which a user has access.
Why would I replace a Widget?
Use cases for when a widget could be replaced are:
When a dashboard widget needs to be replaced
When a duplicated dashboard needs other widgets
When users want to retain a layout but replace widgets leading to a significant improvement in efficiency.
When users want to replace a widget while retaining the widget-level customisation of the original widget.
How do I replace a widget?
A widget can be replaced by clicking on the Replace Widget icon found on each widget.
Clicking on the icon opens the Replace Widget panel, where users can filter and find a replacement widget.
Save Dashboard
Once the widget has been saved, remember to save the Dashboard. To revert changes, including any replaced widgets, back to their original state, Discard Changes at the Dashboard option.
Which widgets can be replaced?
A widget on any Dashboard you have edit rights can be replaced.
All Widget types can be replaced:
Combo charts
Pie charts
Scatter charts
Headline Figure charts.
A widget in any state can be replaced:
Active
Error state
Due to missing Chart
Due to data or connection errors.
What happens to customisation done to the widget?
All customisation is retained, and the replacement widget inherits all these properties:
The Widget Instance Properties panel
Manual residing
Will the sizes reset to default sizes?
No, sizes are not reset. Since all Widget Instance Properties are retained, the size is also retained.
Why do I see a different name in the Replace Widget panel?
If customisations have been made to the Widget's name, the widget instance's original chart name is shown. The Chart name is shown because:
Users can customise the names of charts at a widget instance, so it may not be indicative of the chart name
Multiple instances of the same chart can exist on a Dashboard.
This is the chart's name assigned while creating the Chart in Explore DataGrid.
If they are the same, chances are that no customisations have been made or the customised name is the same as the original chart name.
