BlueConic tracks a comprehensive set of marketing metrics to help you analyze the performance of your dialogues, including views, clicks, and conversions. This article explains how these metrics are calculated and how you can use them to optimize your dialogues.

Key marketing metrics

BlueConic tracks the following metrics for each dialogue and its variants:

  • Views: Total number of times a dialogue is displayed.

  • Unique views: Number of unique visitor profiles who viewed the dialogue (counted once per profile within the reporting timeframe).

  • Clicks: Total number of clicks on any element within the dialogue.

  • Unique clicks: Number of unique visitor profiles who clicked on the dialogue.

  • Direct conversions: Number of conversions directly attributed to the dialogue (e.g., a user clicks a call-to-action within the dialogue and completes a desired action).

  • Unique direct conversions: Number of unique visitor profiles who converted directly through the dialogue.

  • Indirect conversions: Number of conversions where the dialogue played a role in the user journey but wasn't the final interaction before conversion (e.g., a user views the dialogue, then later converts after interacting with other content).

  • Unique indirect conversions: Number of unique visitor profiles who indirectly converted through the dialogue.

  • Total conversions: Sum of direct and indirect conversions.

  • Unique total conversions: Number of unique visitor profiles who converted either directly or indirectly through the dialogue.

Note: Unique metrics count each profile only once within the specified reporting period, even if they interact with the dialogue multiple times.

How does the reporting time period affect the calculation of unique views, clicks, and conversions for dialogues?

  • Unique metrics (views, clicks, conversions) are counted only if they are both within the specified reporting period AND the first occurrence for that user within that period. For example, if a user viewed a dialogue 60 days ago and again 10 days ago, and your report covers the last 30 days, that view won't count as unique because their first view happened outside the 30-day window.

What's the difference between a direct and indirect conversion?

  • A direct conversion means the dialogue was the last interaction the visitor had before converting (e.g., clicking the subscribe button within the dialogue). An indirect conversion means the dialogue was part of the visitor's journey, but they interacted with other content before converting.

Think of it like this:

  • Dialogue 1: User clicks a link but doesn't convert. (Indirect conversion)

  • Dialogue 2: User clicks another link but still doesn't convert. (No conversion)

  • Dialogue 3: User finally clicks the "subscribe" button and converts. (Direct conversion)

How do I track marketing metrics for views, clicks, and conversions in BlueConic?

Only the final dialogue that leads to the conversion gets counted as a direct conversion, while earlier dialogues that influenced the journey are counted as indirect conversions.

My dialogue’s conversion moment isn’t being tracked even though visitors are clicking on the dialogue . How can I fix this?

  • For a conversion to be recorded in BlueConic, a click event must first be registered. This normally requires setting up a Click event selector in the dialogue’s advanced settings. However, if your click event selector and conversion moment selector are a click on the same element, you can simplify the setup by enabling view-through conversions instead. View-through conversions don’t require a separate click event selector. When enabled, a conversion will be registered if a visitor views the dialogue and then clicks the conversion moment selector, ensuring conversions appear correctly in the Optimization window.

How long is a view-through conversion tracked in BlueConic Dialogues?

  • When you enable view-through conversions in a Dialogue, BlueConic allows a conversion to be attributed to a view even if the conversion happens during a later visit or on a different site where BlueConic is active. There is no fixed time limit for this attribution. As long as the visitor is still identified and the original view event exists in their profile timeline, a conversion can be linked back to that Dialogue. If the visitor does not view or click any other Dialogue before converting, the original Dialogue will be recorded as a direct conversion. If they interact with other Dialogues in the meantime, those will be considered indirect or more recent direct conversion sources, depending on the interaction sequence.

Why don’t my dialogue view numbers match the size of my segment?

  • Dialogue views are based on the number of profiles that actually visit your site during the reporting period, not the total size of the segment. The “Who” setting in a dialogue defines which profiles qualify to see it, but that does not guarantee that all of those profiles visited your site while the dialogue was active. To validate this, copy the dialogue’s target segment and add conditions for recent site visits. This will give you a more accurate estimate of the maximum number of profiles that could have seen the dialogue, which should align more closely with the actual dialogue view count in your insights.

How can I see the performance of a Dialogue in BlueConic?

  • You can view Dialogue performance by selecting the Optimization tab. For deeper reporting, use insights such as Dialogue Effectiveness, Dialogues Graph, Dialogues Table, Dialogues KPI, and Variants insights to track views, clicks, conversions, and variant performance over time.
