Barcode not scanning investigation guide

This Guide will show you how to investigate Barcode scanning issues if reported by a Care home.

  • Obtain list of patients & medications not scanning.

  • Check the medications have been packaged/handed out.

  • Check if there is a duplicate resident on CAPA?

  • Are the medications listed on repeat med?

  • Is the medication active? (Treatment not yet started means the treatment is set to start in the future & the barcode will not scan unit this date unless the go live date is changed).

  • Check CAPA to see if the medications have already been booked in or scanned?

  • Check if the drug has been stopped on Atlas eMAR?

  • Check if there a change in strength or form of the medication on Atlas eMAR?

  • Are they showing on the booking in screen on the device?

  • What message appears on the screen when you scan the barcode?

  • Ask the home to test barcode on the Device – go into prescription view>scan barcode – if the label scans it will show the details of the item they just scanned, and they can view the prescription. If it doesn’t then take the barcode number from dispense label, including the dispense date & medication and escalate them via the bugs channel to check the database.
