Dataset Overview
This dataset provides an indication of the potential for residents to park vehicles off street across detached, semi-detached and terraced properties. This desk-based assessment classifies properties based on the numbers of spaces to park a standard sized car in front of the house: 0, 1 or 2+. This dataset can be used to inform EV charging and on street parking strategies by providing insights into the number of residents who require on street parking and therefore on street charging as part of the transition from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) transportation.
Methodology
This dataset is a desk based assessment which uses a geospatial query to assess potential for off-street parking based on the available space between the front of a house and the nearest roadway. This assessment includes properties that have driveways as well as properties that do not currently have driveways, but would have sufficient space for one should residents require off street parking in future (e.g. to charge a zero emission vehicle off street).
The output dataset has been validated through manual assessment of a representative sample of buildings both in person and via detailed geospatial queries.
Key Assumptions
For the purposes of this assessment the space required to park one car is considered to be 15m2. The space required to park two cars is considered to be 30m2.
Increasingly it is becoming more possible for residents to park on the street but charge using a home charger through the use of gulleys. This may allow for a greater percentage of residents without off street parking to make use of home chargers. However, neighbourhoods where a high proportion of residents do not have access to at-home parking will still require more on street charging compared to neighbourhoods where residents can park at home.
Fields
Field | Description |
UPRN | The unique property reference number. |
Parking | The number of cars that can potentially be parked within the property. |
Parkable area (m2) | The space available for parking in meters squared. |
