Off-site tracking in Ads Defender enables accurate measurement and detection of unqualified clicks directly through ad platforms, independently from website-based tracking methods. This ensures that click fraud protection remains effective even when on-site tags are blocked or fail to load due to browser restrictions or short session durations.
In this article, we’ll explain how off-site tracking works across ad platforms – Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, and Meta Ads – and how to enable it through Ads Defender.
Why Off-Site Tracking is Important
On-site tracking, through Main Tags and Session Tags, is essential for monitoring user behavior. However, certain limitations can affect its performance:
Browser settings blocking on-site tags.
Short sessions that end before the tags load.
Blockers preventing tag execution.
Off-site tracking bypasses these issues by measuring clicks directly at the ad platform level, ensuring that unqualified clicks are still detected and mitigated. Ads Defender is a verified click tracker, which is obtained only for specific providers, that the ad platforms trust.
1. Google Ads – Tracking Template
Method:
Ads Defender applies a tracking template at the account level in Google Ads.
This template appends tracking information to ad URLs, allowing Ads Defender to monitor clicks without relying on website-based scripts.
How to Enable:
Log into Ads Defender.
Navigate to the Click Fraud feature.
Open the Settings menu under Click Fraud.
Locate the section for Tracking Template.
Toggle the switch to enable automatic application of the tracking template at the account level.
Important Notes:
If an existing tracking template is already present at the account level, Ads Defender will warn the user before overriding it.
If a more specific tracking template exists at the campaign, ad group, or ad level, it will override the Ads Defender tracking template at the account level.
Tip: Review tracking templates across all levels (campaign, ad group, and ad) to avoid unintentional overrides.
If an account-level tracking template needs to stay:
The Ads Defender template must be nested manually into the existing account-level template.
This process is not yet automated or available through the UI.
Contact your Ads Defender representative to receive the correct tracking template for nesting.
2. Microsoft Ads – Tracking Template
Method:
Microsoft Ads uses an account-level tracking template similar to Google Ads.
Ads Defender pushes the tracking template directly to the account when activated.
How to Enable:
Go to the Click Fraud Settings in Ads Defender.
Find the Tracking Template section
Toggle the switch to activate the template across all Microsoft Ads campaigns.
Important Notes:
More specific templates at the campaign, ad group, or ad level will override the Ads Defender tracking template at the account level.
You should audit their accounts to ensure no lower-level templates interfere with the account-level template.
If an account-level template is necessary for other purposes, users must manually nest the Ads Defender template into the existing one.
Contact Ads Defender for the correct tracking template and instructions on nesting.
3. Meta Ads – h_ext Parameter
Method:
For Meta Ads, off-site tracking uses a custom parameter called the h_ext parameter.
This parameter is appended to ad URLs, allowing Ads Defender to track clicks.
How to Enable:
In Ads Defender, go to Click Fraud Settings.
Locate the section for Custom Parameter (h_ext).
Toggle the switch to automatically push the h_ext parameter to all active ads.
Ads Defender will push and maintain h_ext parameter in all ads. As existing ads are edited, they will be going into review by meta once again, when the toggle is switched on.
Alternative: Manual Option:
Users can manually create the h_ext parameter and add it to ad creatives.
However, this method requires ongoing maintenance:
Each time new ads are created, the h_ext parameter must be added manually.
Omitting the parameter could result in gaps in tracking.
Important: Regular Review of coverage is recommended to ensure consistent tracking.
Troubleshooting Off-Site Tracking
1. Tracking Templates Overridden by More Specific Templates
Problem: Tracking templates at the campaign, ad group, or ad level override Ads Defender’s template at the account level.
Solution:
Review your Google Ads and Microsoft Ads accounts for tracking templates at lower levels.
Remove unnecessary lower-level templates to ensure the account-level template is not overridden.
If the lower-level templates are required, manually nest the Ads Defender template into them.
2. Existing Account-Level Tracking Templates
Problem: An account-level tracking template is already in place, and enabling Ads Defender’s template will overwrite it.
Solution:
Do not toggle the switch immediately.
Contact Ads Defender to receive the correct tracking template for manual nesting.
Add the Ads Defender template to the end of the existing tracking template.
3. Missing Tracking on New Ads (Meta)
Problem: Users manually adding the h_ext parameter may forget to apply it to new ad creatives.
Solution:
Use the automatic toggle to push the h_ext parameter across all ads.
Regularly review ad creatives to ensure the parameter is consistently applied.
