Who can act as a reader?

L
Written by Lucy Kelford

A reader can be arranged as a reasonable adjustment to support a learner during End-Point Assessment (EPA), where appropriate.

Eligibility to Act as a Reader

  • A reader can be any individual who:

    • Understands the role and responsibilities of a reader

    • Is able to read assessment materials clearly, accurately, and without interpretation

    • Can follow all assessment conditions and guidelines

The reader must act in a strictly neutral capacity and must not provide any additional explanation, prompting, or support beyond reading the content verbatim.

Restrictions

To maintain the integrity and fairness of the assessment, the reader must not be:

  • A friend of the learner

  • A relative of the learner

  • The learner’s teacher or trainer

This ensures there is no potential conflict of interest or unintended support that could influence the outcome of the assessment.

Important Considerations

  • The use of a reader must be approved in advance as part of a reasonable adjustment request

  • The reader must be fully briefed on:

    • Their responsibilities

    • The limits of the role

    • The need to maintain assessment security and impartiality

Failure to meet these requirements may result in the adjustment being withdrawn or the assessment being invalidated.
