Why is the version number of an apprenticeship standard important?

Written by Lucy Kelford

The version number of an apprenticeship standard is a critical element of learner registration, delivery, and assessment. It ensures that apprentices are trained and assessed against the correct and current requirements for their programme.

Differences Between Standard Versions

Apprenticeship standards are periodically updated to reflect changes in industry requirements and assessment practices. As a result:

  • Assessment requirements can differ between versions

  • Updates may include:

    • Changes to Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)

    • Revised or new assessment methods

    • Updated grading criteria

    • Adjustments to End-Point Assessment (EPA) expectations

It is therefore essential that each apprentice is assessed against the specific version of the standard they were enrolled on, as using the wrong version could result in assessment against incorrect criteria.

Compliance and Audit Requirements

Accurate version selection is also essential for compliance purposes:

  • Enrolment and registration records must align with the correct version of the standard

  • Using an incorrect version may lead to:

    • Inaccurate assessment outcomes

    • Issues with certification claims

    • Potential non-compliance during audits or quality assurance checks

Maintaining accurate records ensures that providers meet regulatory and funding requirements.

Impact on Learner Progression

Selecting the correct version helps ensure:

  • A fair and valid assessment experience for the apprentice

  • Alignment between training delivery and EPA expectations

  • A smooth progression through gateway and onto certification

Incorrect versioning can lead to delays, rework, or the need for reassessment.
