What is considered a special consideration?

L
Written by Lucy Kelford

A special consideration is a post- or pre-assessment adjustment that may be applied when a learner’s performance has been adversely affected by exceptional circumstances beyond their control.

When a Special Consideration Applies

A special consideration can be requested where an event occurs:

  • Shortly before the assessment

  • During the assessment

In all cases, the event must have had a direct impact on the learner’s ability to perform to the best of their ability.

Examples of Special Consideration Circumstances

Situations that may be considered include (but are not limited to):

  • Sudden illness or injury affecting the learner

  • Bereavement or serious personal circumstances

  • Unexpected disruption during the assessment (e.g. technical failure, environmental issues)

  • Other unforeseen and unavoidable events

The key consideration is that the circumstance was:

  • Out of the learner’s control, and

  • Likely to have affected their performance

Post-Assessment Considerations

Special consideration may also apply:

  • After the assessment has taken place, if evidence emerges that the learner was impacted

  • To support a request for an extension to the assessment window, where appropriate

Important Considerations

  • Special consideration is not a substitute for a reasonable adjustment (which must be arranged in advance)

  • Requests must be supported by appropriate evidence

  • Each request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis
