What types of adjustments are available for EPA?

Written by Lucy Kelford

A range of reasonable adjustments may be available for End-Point Assessment (EPA), depending on the apprentice’s individual needs and the requirements of the assessment.

Reference to Approved Adjustments

The types of adjustments that can be applied are defined within the Reasonable Adjustment Matrix, developed by IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education).

  • This matrix outlines:

    • The types of adjustments permitted

    • The assessment component types (e.g. professional discussion, observation, test)

    • The categories of learning difficulty or disability

Providers should refer to this matrix to confirm which adjustments are appropriate and allowable for each specific scenario.

Types of Adjustments

While the exact adjustments depend on the individual case and the assessment method, examples may include:

  • Extra time for written or timed assessments

  • Rest breaks during longer assessments

  • Use of assistive technology (e.g. screen readers)

  • Modified assessment materials (e.g. large print, coloured overlays)

  • Alternative assessment arrangements, where permitted

All adjustments must be:

  • Relevant to the apprentice’s needs

  • Proportionate and not compromise the integrity of the assessment

  • Reflective of the apprentice’s normal way of working

Important Considerations

  • Not all adjustments are suitable for all assessment components

  • Some components may have restrictions to ensure assessment validity

  • All requests must be supported by appropriate evidence and approved by EAL before implementation
