When should a reasonable adjustment be requested?

Written by Lucy Kelford

Reasonable adjustments should be requested as early as possible to ensure there is sufficient time for review, approval, and implementation without impacting assessment timelines.

Preferred Timing: Before Gateway Submission

  • Requests for reasonable adjustments should ideally be submitted and approved prior to gateway submission

  • This ensures that:

    • All requirements are in place before EPA planning begins

    • There are no delays in booking assessments

    • Appropriate arrangements can be made in advance with the assessor

Submitting adjustments early supports a smoother transition from gateway into EPA.

Requests After Gateway Submission

If a reasonable adjustment is identified after gateway has been submitted:

  • The request must be submitted at least 30 days before the scheduled EPA date

  • This allows sufficient time for:

    • Review of the supporting evidence

    • Consideration and approval of the adjustment

    • Implementation of any required arrangements

Late submissions may result in delays or the need to reschedule assessments if there is insufficient time to process the request.

Important Considerations

  • All requests must be supported by appropriate evidence (as outlined in the reasonable adjustments guidance)

  • Adjustments must reflect the apprentice’s usual way of working

  • Early communication between the provider and EAL is key to avoiding disruption
