If the apprentice has failed a component, do they have to resit their entire EPA?

No, apprentices are not usually required to retake the entire End-Point Assessment (EPA) if they fail a single component.

Resitting Individual Components

  • If an apprentice fails one or more components, they will typically only need to:

    • Resit the failed component(s)

  • Any components that have already been passed do not need to be retaken

This approach allows apprentices to focus only on the areas where they did not meet the required standard.

Assessment Window Considerations

However, there are circumstances where a full EPA retake may be required:

  • Each apprenticeship standard includes an assessment window, as defined in the Assessment Plan

  • This is the timeframe within which all EPA components (including any resits) must be completed

If the apprentice:

  • Exceeds the allowed assessment window,
    they may be required to:

    • Retake the entire EPA, including all components

Important Considerations

  • Providers should always check the specific Assessment Plan for the standard to confirm:

    • Resit rules

    • Time limits

    • Any additional conditions

  • Delays in arranging or completing resits could impact whether the apprentice remains within the permitted timeframe
