How many times can an apprentice resit a failed component?

L
Written by Lucy Kelford

The number of times an apprentice can resit a failed End-Point Assessment (EPA) component is determined by the specific apprenticeship standard and is outlined within its Assessment Plan.

Standard-Specific Rules

Each Assessment Plan will set out:

  • Whether resits and/or retakes are permitted

  • Any limits on the number of attempts

  • The conditions under which a resit or retake can take place

This information can typically be found:

  • Within the section relating to the individual assessment component, or

  • In a dedicated resit/retake section of the Assessment Plan

If No Maximum Attempts Are Stated

  • If the Assessment Plan does not specify a maximum number of resit attempts, the component may be:

    • Retaken multiple times, as needed

    • Subject to employer agreement and approval

Time Limits on Resits

Some standards also include time restrictions for resits. For example:

  • A requirement that all resits must be completed within a defined period (e.g. within 3 months of the original attempt)

  • If this timeframe is exceeded, the apprentice may be required to:

    • Retake the entire EPA, rather than just the individual component

Important Considerations

  • Providers should always check the latest version of the Assessment Plan for the relevant standard

  • Employers may have a role in approving whether a resit is supported

  • Delays in completing resits could impact overall completion timelines and certification
