Does the provider need to provide evidence of Maths and English achievement at gateway?

Requirements for Maths and English (Functional Skills) evidence at gateway depend on the apprentice’s age at the start of their apprenticeship.

Apprentices Aged 18 or Over at Start

For apprentices who were 18 or older at the start of their apprenticeship:

  • Providers are no longer required to submit evidence of achieving Level 2 Maths and English at gateway

  • Instead, providers must upload a completed exemption form covering these components

This form confirms that the apprentice is exempt from the requirement under current funding rules.

Apprentices Under 18 at Start

For apprentices who were under 18 at the start of their apprenticeship:

  • The requirement to achieve Level 2 Maths and English still applies (where specified)

  • Providers must ensure that evidence of achievement is included as part of the gateway submission

Important Considerations

  • The exemption applies only based on the apprentice’s age at the start of the programme, not their age at gateway

  • The correct documentation (either evidence of achievement or an exemption form) must be uploaded to avoid delays or rejection

  • Requirements should always be checked alongside the relevant funding rules and standard assessment plan
