Internal moderation process overview:
The Centre marks should be recorded on the rank order document in descending order - with the highest marks at the top and the lowest marks at the bottom. This will provide a rank order of the Centre results for the qualification.
The Internal Moderator – (IM) may consider beginning the moderation activity by looking at all learners’ results in rank order to select a sample across the cusp of the grades as a starting point.
This can then be used by the IM to set out a sample across the units, checking the marking of each of these assessments by reviewing the assessment decisions and recording their marks/scores for each unit.
The next stage will be for the IM to confirm their grade based on the marks/scores recorded for example: the marks or score assigned to define a grade such as Pass, Merit and Distinction.
A review of the assessors marks/scores and grades then follows to see if they agree with the outcomes. At this stage, some marks may be recommended to be changed. This can also be applied to qualifications that have a pass or refer outcome by using the scores or marks assigned.
If the IM needs to recommend changing marks for the marking they have reviewed, they should expand the sample range of marks they are checking by looking at other learners’ work.
If the IM finds a consistent trend or pattern in an assessor’s marking, they may recommend adjusting the marks of other learners’ work, marked by the same assessor, in line with this trend or pattern.
By internally moderating the marks, the IM produces a final list of all the Centre marks for that qualification.
The rank order document of the marks must be presented by the internal moderator to the nominated Centre IQA, who is responsible for the authorisation of the claims. This document will be the record presented to your External Quality Assurer - (EQA) when requested.
EAL will moderate the assessments and the sample of learners’ work - sampled by the internal moderator under EAL’s arrangements for AO moderation across Centres - providing confidence that all marking within each centre is consistent and fair to all Learners who have been registered and awarded for the same qualification/unit.
There are Key Recording Documents presented in this document that must be completed and retained by the Centre and presented when requested by EAL.
Failure to provide these documents may delay awarding certification of the qualification and units.
Copies of these document templates will also be available in the Smarter Touch document library.
